Intoxalock - Issues from the start
Original review Apr 14, 2024

I've only had my device installed for two days and I've already had it give me a code 10 violation 2 days in a row while driving. I attempted multiple breath samples and it would not let me complete them.

The breathing pattern was the same as I do every other time and when I start the car. Once I'm finally able to get a retest it accepts I pass but by that time it's past the 5 minute mark and it has placed me on lockout. The rep was pretty much useless and could barely understand what I was saying or respond to my questions. I'm taking it in Monday to get checked to see if it's faulty but if it's deemed it's not then I'm finding another company to go with.

I can't afford to spend $100 for each lockout when I'm trying to provide a clean sample. This is ridiculous and beyond stressful in an already stressful situation. What is the point of the camera if you can see me trying to attempt the sample and when I have the passed sample?!

Anyone else having the same issue? Just between setup, install and now 2 lockouts I'm out over $500 in just 2 days...

Extortion, Faulty System

Customer ID: 161****...On February 20th I arrived at my house in my Tahoe that is equiped with an Intoxalock interlock device. I've had this equipment installed in my vehicle for 1 year and 3 months. I was only supposed to have it for 1 year but in August of 2023 I was called out of town on short notice only to arrive back into town on the last day left to have the device "calibrated". My service center closes at 5PM so I rushed there only to find that they had closed early. I arrived at 4:45PM. After a missed calibration you can't start so on the next day I loaded it onto a flatbed and had it towed to get calibrated. This earned me a 3 month extension. Ok, back to the 20th. Arrived at my house at 6:03PM and turned off the vehicle. I changed the wiper blades and went to hook up the trickle charger. I've never had battery problems before this device was installed but have had to replace 2 since then and now my current battery is on its last legs. I wanted to see if I could start the car after it had just been running so I engaged the handheld, blew zeros, and attempted to start. It clicked but failed to start. A couple more attempts were made with my jump pack but still wouln't start so I hooked up the charger and went inside my house for the evening. The next morning I went to start the car only to be greeted with a violation message. I thought this must be a mistake. I had just gotten it calibrated ($35) so I call intoxalock who informed me that their system had logged a misseed "rolling retest" or random retest. This is the test that occures after you start the vehicle and it randomly asks you for a sample to see if you are drinking while driving. According to their website (check their knowledge center) this is defined as: "A random (also known as random) retest requires drivers to provide breath samples while the vehicle is running. They're required with all state-certified ignition interlock devices." I explained that there must have been some kind of mistake. I wouldn't miss a retest, I know exactly how this thing works and wouldn't risk missing one this close to my 180 compliance. They told me what time it happened. It was exactly when I was trying to jump the car. I explained the situation and that the car was never on. I'm not going to expect a random test if it's not even running unless I've just turned it off at the same time it asked for one. I have spoken to multiple reps pleading to have this violation removed as this is not something covered in their own handbook and website. They refuse to budge and tell me I must start my 6 months all over again. I've contacted the licensing department who tell me they only go by what the company tells them and intoxalock tells me only the licensing department can make that decision. I'm at a total loss. I do ok with my income but I can not imagine how most people could absorb this kind of finacial impact. 6 days left and they hit me with a violation that will cause me to have this in my vahicle for almost two years if nothing else goes wrong. I've contacted the state police to see if they are willing to help as they are the regulating authority. I have video (with sound) of the time I arrived home to the time I went inside my home that shows that I was unable to get my car to start back up once I arrived. I also took a video from inside the vehicle today which shows how the system will fail to acknowledge the vehicle being off with the keys out and still trigger a rolling retest. I will write a new review every day for each additional day I have this device installed. If you are reading this review and are finding yourself in a similar situation. I encourage you to write your own review here on Trustpilot to warn others about choosing Intoxalock. You do have a choice. Anyway, I have a date with small claims court. Watch your backs and your wallet. Do not choose Intoxalock. P.S. There is no way in *** they get 5 star reviews. I'd bet money that the Indian call center they use for their customer service is also paid to write those which goes against this websites terms of service.

They make you keep it longer then suppose to. Had the paper work to get off and they sat on it for a month.

Making me paying another 100 bucks for having the device. So haven't paid it, and got my device off, shouldn't have to pay it. Txting me saying we ready to close you account.

You already cost my three payment of $75 lock out fee. When my car was off and walked away from it.

I will start this the same way i'm ending it, by saying that this intoxalock system and company has a far vaster and DARKER design than any of us can comprehend. We are going to have to start with the obvious, outsourcing jobs. With something as serious as a lockout or a device malfunction that could harm a person's A. Relationship with the court, or B. driving privileges that equate to (livelihood), if you cannot understand the person you are communicating with, we are off the a rocky start. If you don't have several hours to spend on the phone getting passed around from person to person, explaining and re-explaining your issues with no resolution, then you are out luck. If you somehow blow a false positive for any number of reasons, good look getting your footage reviewed in a timely manner. If you are told a supervisor will review your footage and make a decision in 3 days, that is not accurate. If you don't have an extra 75.00 to cover something that is not your fault? Good luck. If you spend hours calling to make sure that the footage is reviewed so that you don't overdraft, it is not relevant. Basically, you don't matter. Your safety is not relevant. The device you pay a hefty monthly fee for really owes you nothing. If you have a malfunctioning device and it can clearly be seen in your footage that you are blowing over and over, properly* and it is not accepting your blow, that's still not relevant. If youre lucky enough to get through to an american supervisor, they will say, we see that your window is slightly open and this can affect the temperature of your blow. Well, its cracked an inch, its 70 degrees outside with zero wind. Please. I have had this device in my car for 9 months now and I know how to use it. Ill just touch on the most recent experience of it not accepting my blow, almost made me get into an accident, because it was in the middle of my driving. Not safe. I immediately took it out to the service center because it gave me a lock out in 4 days message and I do not have a job that will accomodate this. When I arrived, saturday 2pm i attempted to call intoxalock to have them send a work order for my handheld device to get switched by order of the service center manager. As he has seen me multiple times now for device, not user issues. The branch of intoxalock (mechanic branch) that can send that particular work orders were not working easter weekend, i was informed by the lower level person on the phone. I can't get upset for people missing work because of a holiday, although easter wasn't until the next day? I was told, you have to come back monday. Monday morning I called intoxalock. I told the employee exactly what I was instructed by the service center. "I need a work order and PO to have my handheld swapped for another, as it is malfunctioning. I was assured that the work order had been sent. I left early from work, drove across the city only to arrive at my service center where to manager told me that they had just sent a Repair order for a reset, not a handheld swap. So let me translate this for you, They are going to reset my device, charge me 30 bucks to do-so (not reimbursed by intoxalock) put my malfunctioning device back in, and of course intox will also charge me the 75 dollar lock out fee which i will once again have to fight for the be reimbursed. I had no choice but to do this because...you guessed it, i had to get back to work across town. I manage an office and cannot miss work. On the way back to work I called intoxalock where i spoke with a manager who i repeated my story to extensively. She then reviewed the footage with me on the phone, again mentioned the cracked window (as if to insinuate a user error) and said the service center would have to prove that it was a device issue (which i would also have to pay for) if proved, i would then have to pay the restocking fee for the device, not reimbursed by intoxalock. Are you kidding me at this point? So i tell her, hey i have better things to do then go round with you on the phone. Ill keep my broken device because i frankly don't have the time, money or bandwidth to play these games. if this happens again, we will address that when the time comes. I issue a complaint, call and make sure that someone is reviewing my footage to WAIVE the 75.00 lockout fee. I talk to several different employees and explain my situation and finally someone agrees to waive it after first demanding i stay present with them while they call me service center to get proof that its a device issue?? are you KIDDING? watch the footage??? clearly a device issue. So someone agrees to waive it...then...you guessed it- STILL taken our of my bank account. Eff you intoxalock, for this mental and monetary abuse. This system is sad and has a far greater and darker design than any of us can even fathom.

Resolved: Terrible Customer Service

Intoxalock - Terrible Customer Service
Intoxalock - Terrible Customer Service - Image 2
Updated by user Jan 11, 2024

Company fixed the issue and I have been provided with apology. Blanca from Corporate contacted me the very next morning after sharing my reviews on several review sites.

She assured me there would be an internal investigation as to why this all happened to me and offered me a refund from the date I was no longer needing their services and forward from that date.

She also waived the fee to have the device to be removed. I have received my refund and hope to never have to deal with this company or any legal matters in the future.

Original review Dec 13, 2023
Just report them to the Better Business Bureau. Help@***.com is a joke. Their inbox is full and they reject your emails. Customer service is only good when you are paying and setting up your device. You'll never speak to a human besides that ever again. My device was to be taken out in October 2023 and it's not half way through December 2023. They are still taking my money biweekly, still making me calibrate the device. Still can't get ahold of a human. I have put in multiple device removal requests. I have called customer service to deal with a robot. I have called the state, my lawyer and even the judge to be told "call customer service". Since my device was installed, my lights go on at random times. I'm an asthmatic and I have almost died while driving multiple times breathing 3 or 4 times in a row into the machine because "breathe harder next time". You can't auto start your vehicle or be away from it in winter so you'll freeze until your car warms up and you can take off. I highly do not recommend this company or this device.

Bad business practices

My review of intoxalock is that it is simply after as much money as they can get from you, and it has zero to do with public safety or drinking and driving. If it was about drinking and driving they would not let you retest after a failed breathalyzer and in 4 minutes time allow you to drive once you blow zeros. Mind you every time you have a failed breathalyzer it is gonna cost you $75.00 dollars in my case. God forbid you get in your car and turn your key on before blowing in their machine, why, because that is a violation that is gonna cost you $75.00 dollars. You know the definition of extortion is as follows: -- the act of colleting something especially money trough force or threats. They have you by the b$lls, because the future of your drivers license is in their hands. While I agree that it was my fault committing the act of drinking and driving and maybe my case is different than most because I am completely sober, and have been for 13 years, so while I had the breathalyzer installed there would be no way for me to have a failed breathalyzer, right? Wrong. Body spray, listerine, you name it sets that machine to read a failed breathalyzer. So what does the company decide its policy is. Well the machine allows you to try again in approx 4 minutes time and when you pass your car will then start. So when your car starts 4 minutes later after a bad breathalyzer a reasonable person could conclude that it was something other than you drinking alcohol that set the machine off and that should be then end of it right? Wrong, it's $75.00 and a lock out everytime something like this happened. Clearly Intoxalock is about the all mighty dollar, and they hold your drivers license hostage until you pay all of their "fees". I am currently trying to close my account with them as my lease with them was up on December 27th, 2023, and my requirement with Arizona MVD was up on the following day December 27th I paid my account to a zero balance. A ZERO balance, and now intoxalock is saying I owe them 151.98 for admin closing fees and additional lease payments because my service center was closed over the holidays and I could not get the device removed. So I did what the intoxalock agent told me to do and that was to put my car in Service( which by the way creates a lock out and costs $75.00 dollars), but they don't tell you that. My service center could not remove the equipment until Jan 17, 2024. So I scheduled the earliest appointment he had available and had the equipment removed. Intoxalock is trying to charge me for the equipment being in my car until then even though they had me on lockout and the car and equipment were unusable. I am just beside myself because now they are threatening to turn me into collections if I don't resolve the account. I will not give them one red cent more as they have squeezed me for enough money through their violations and fees. I have tried to contact them 6 different times now to resolve their issue and have been hung up on and put on hold for an hour or more. The business practices of intoxalock are shameful, and this company is clearly all about the money. Extortion is what it is. I live in a rural town so I am limited in my options, but I do not suggest anyone sign up for this kind of abuse. I give them a zero star rating and thats to much. I reported Intoxalock to the Better Business Bureau and they are waiting for my final response to them about my entire experience with this company and I intend to follow through with it. I suggest any one in the same or similar situation do the same as that will have a negative impact on the company that counts. A. Morris

Trying to wash your car

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
We talk a lot I found out that you can barely even stop and wash your car. Because if you do, youll be blowing at least six or eight times during the time that it takes like 15 minutes to do your car which I think. They should come up with some kind of system that when youre in the car or driving, you dont have to blow as many times until you either got on out of the car and back in to blow again not why youre still driving. Its just ridiculous with this company I can never really say anything good about it cause everything Ive experienced with. It has been bad. It help the time Ive talked to The one of the representatives and he help me a lot thats about the only time. Its just they need to do something about this system and all other systems because if you have to blow this many times you will be dead by the time you even get back into your car to drive just from washing your car, I just dont get it. They need to come up with some type of system that knows when you end the car and when youre out I mean it its like every now and then you have a camera in the car so they can see that youre not doing anything drinking or whatever so why so many blows in so little time thats what I dont get and I think they need to do something about that, but will they who knows thank you and goodbye

Pros:

Preferred solution: I would like for them to have system where you don’t have to blow so many times when you’re already in the car that’s what I would like.

User's recommendation: my recommendations to future customers is do your investigating on when you get ready to try to get up in interlock in your car because you want to investigate each company properly before you go and do what you need to do. I mean this service you can get Harley anybody on the phone. And when you do get them on the phone they cut you off or they say they gonna put you into another department and they don’t so I will not go with this company. I will try different company and see how they are working and how their inner ants and out I worked.

This entire journey with intoxalock is miserable
I started my car one morning and everything was fine. We got a little snow the night before, but I had already cleaned off my car prior to starting it. Once it started I had a little snow on passenger window, so I hopped out walked around the front of my car wiped the window with my hand and looked inside my car. There is a countdown happening with 2 min. And some odd seconds on the handheld. I rush to driver seat pick up the handheld and wow with 1 min and something on the timer the screen goes blank. So I drive off not knowing what happened and the following day I get a $75 lockout. Can I please know what I did wrong?? I was out of the car for 30-40 seconds max!! .so this is nothing but a money pit. But ya know once you have a DUI you are a criminal so nobody cares. This device should be in court for fraud. its sickening someone getting rich on other's misfortune. Plenty more I could add but nobody listens.

What a scam

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I received a 60 day ARD suspension & received the intoxalock info in the mail. After calling & talking to Kyle #566 I was informed I need to have this unit installed asap and gave me the pricing. After setting up an appointment & dropping off my vehicle it took 6 days since the service center didn't receive the unit and when they did it was defective and had to order another one. The pricing I received on the phone for installation was more as is the other costs. After sending in the paperwork to my department of transportation I received a letter that I'm not required to have this in my vehicle. I've called a couple times to have this removed but there dragging their feet wanting another letter from the state which I can't get since I'm not required to have this in the first place. I'm at the point I having my attorney handle this & remove it myself. It would be cheaper to uber every day then install this thing. Oh & try blowing into this thing when it goes off and your driving in traffic.
